The higher the index, the more distortion outside the optical center of the lenses. However, you can get pretty good asperic lenses made in 1.74 for -10.00 and some astigmatism correction. They have some pretty good ones at Zeiss or Hoya lensmaker.
For those eyes, the other options would be LASIK, PRK, refractive lens exchange, contact lenses, RGP lenses, orthokeratology for full or partial correction to wear a less strong lens.
