Did you know that there are different types of crossed eyes?
There are two directions, exotropia refers to the eye turning out, towards the ears. Esotropia refers to the eye turning in towards the nose.
There are two type of frequenciess, constant, which is always there. And intermittent, which is there only sometimes. It comes out when we are stressed or under a worser state.
Those with a constant and same measurable amount of turned eye, exotropia or esotropia, have a better success of surgery for cosmetic concerns.
If it's intermittent, you have better luck with vision therapy. At any rate, vision therapy would help to improve the 3D vision.
A functional eye exam is critical in getting a better stereo to start the vision therapy and ensure faster recovery. The lens changes would be necessary during the course of vision therapy treatment.
Did you konw that you can have crossed eyes, but not lazy eyes?
People with crossed eyes may have 20/20 in both eyes, which are not lazy.
There are two types of lazy eyes, refractive amblyopia, or strabismic amblyopia.
Refractive amblyopia happens when the two eyes have very different power, and the brain chooses one of the eye to communicate mostly.
Strabismic amblyopia happens when one eye turns out, and the brain chooses the other eye to communicate more with.
Lazy eye is when the vision is reduced from 20/20 to 20/30 or worse. It can be due to refractive changes, or due to the crossed eyes.
Lazy eyes can only be improved with lens therapy, syntonic light theray and vision therapy. It cannot be improved by patching or surgery. The two eyes have to work together, and communicate with the brain in between to team well.
Lazy eye treatment also starts with a good functional vision exam and lens therapy as well for better stereo. The lenses may also need to be changed during the course of therapy to help the eyes see more clear and better in 3D. Vision therapy would ensure better saccadic eye movements, eye tracking, eye teaming, eye focusing, and integrate them all for better reading, writing, copying, driving, and sports for better life performance. Before it's fully integrated, regression can occur. If left untreated, the error in spatial judgement would affect the accuracy and efficiency of their work.
In the event of the child or adult suffered from a motor vehicle accident, a fall, a whiplash, a concussion, a viral or baterial infection, or neuro-inflammation such as long COVID, the recovery may be delayed or regression may occur, and more vision therapy sessions may be required.
