3D or stereo vision is produced when two images are set slightly apart. Our eyes sees it and send both sets of data to the brain. The brain processes this visual information and produce a 3D image.
3D vision was mostly thought of used in 3D movies. But we actually use it in our everyday life.
1. We use it for learning. Kids learn to judge distance and acquire spatial skills to put things together and organize them. It can affect their ability to understand complex shapes and math and geometry in later life. It can also affect their reading speed, spelling accurately, handwriting and comprehension.
2. It can also affect their judgement for time and space for driving late teens and adults. We need to know how soon the car will come next to us to avoid them. That takes accurate intake of other cars before changing lanes or merging into highways, or to avoid curbs, or pedestrains.
3. In sports, we need to know where our teammates are, where is the ball and where is the target. All of these require stereo or 3D vision. We can use it to avoid running into teammates, hit the ball and win goals. It also helps to judege distance for swimming and running the bases.
4. In day to day task, crossing the street, going up and down the stairs, and checking how fast the cars are going by before we cross the street requires good 3D vision. It would helps us navigate the world inside and outside our homes safely.

Frequently Asked Questions with Dr. Yan Ling Liang
Q: How can vision therapy help with 3D vision issues?
- A: After we perform a functional vision exam to confirm that vision therapy is the right choice for you or your child, we’ll begin creating a customized therapy program for your specific needs. The vision therapy program will help improve eye brain coordination, improve accurate mapping of distances in your brain, and help improve the visual system. It may take a bit of time, but it's quite successful.
Q: What is the difference between a functional eye exam and routine eye exam?
- A: A standard eye exam will check for visual acuity and the presence of eye disease. However, a routine exam doesn’t assess eye teaming, convergence/divergence and other problems affecting 3D and binocular vision. That’s why a functional eye exam is so important. If your child is behind in school or having developmental issues, these may be tied to vision problems that can be detected as part of a functional eye exam.
If your children have any of these visual symptoms, we can help you imporve their 3D vision and other visual skills.
