Orthok and Myopia Control Center
Did you know that Dr. Liang started wearing glasses when she was 11 years old? She understands the trouble children and parents can have as their eyes grow and develop over the years. With technological advancement in Ipads and smart phones, and less outdoor play, children have started developing conditions such as myopia at a younger age. To combat this, our vision center started working with them in managing myopia by using Orthokeratology and other myopia control methods.
It's critical to start doing myopia control if myopia starts before age 10.
It's considered early onset if myopia started before age 10.
If one parent has myopia, the child would have 20% chance of having myopia.
If both parents have myopia, the child would have 40% chance of having myopia.
Our doctor in Warden Optometry is well trained in myopia control. Dr. Liang updates her training on myopia control courses yearly. She's also one of the few in Canada that are trained in both myopia control and vision therapy. The advanced myopia control methods she is trained to offer include:

FAQs for Orthok
What is Orthokeratology (OrthoK)?
Orthokeratology allows your eyes to see clearly during the day, without contact lenses, glasses or surgery by having the RGP lens on your eyes during your sleep.
Is if safe?
Orthokeratology is safe and reversible if done correctly. Similar to other contact lenses people put inside their eye, a proper training for insertion, removal and cleaning are critial. Our office provide at least one hour training for new orthok wearers. And review for any previous orthok wearers.
What benefit does it provide?
It allows children to have clear vision during the day without glasses or contact. They are great for those who dance, swim, plays hockey, or other sports.
What power does it work on?
It helps to control myopia in children for -1.00 to -8.00 power. The cylinder power should be less than the sphere power.
What age can I start?
We can help those from age 6 years old and up.
Who is a good candidate for Orthokeratology?
- Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is great for those with lower the growth of myopia or nearsightedness.
- If you can't wear contact lenses for day time due to allergy or dryness, you can wear orthokeratology lenses for night time. You would have good vision during the day without correction. It's easy to use. It would reduce your day time discomfort with conventional contact lenses.
- If you are concerned about the risk of LASIK or other refractive eye surgery's, OrthoK is the right answer for you.
- If you need great vision without glasses or contacts, you can benefit from orthokeratology. That includes professions such as police officers, military personel, actors, dancers, surfers and life guards.
- For children, orthokeratology is one of the best option for myopia control. It reduces the growth in myopia in 46%. This would reduce the chance of high myopia (-6.00 or higher) in adult life, and would reduce the chance of glaucoma and retinal detachment.
- For those with binocular vision concerns, there may be a need for a binocular vision exam and vision therapy to control the pseudomyopia (over-focusing) before, or with the orthokeratology treatment for better effect.
