Contact Lens Exam
What Should I Expect When I Get my Contact Lens Exam?
BOur Optometrist would use your current glasses prescription, do some calculation and hand pick the pair of lenses that fit your eyes for the power and shape, material and wearing schedule. All monthly contacts needs to be thrown out after 30 days from opening day, two week lenses need to be thrown out after 14 days, and daily lenses need to be thrown out at the end of the day. RGP or Keratoconus lenses are to be replaced yearly or biyearly.
She would do more than one visit, if required to update to the perfect fit to assessment for lens and solution reactions with your eyes. One follow up would be provided at no extra charge.
You may be able to go home with a pair of lens on your first contact lens assessment, and return with it (if it's not a daily disposable) for second assessment, a new pair may be given if it needs to be changed due to comfort, vision or interaction with your eyes.
If you have never wear contact lenses before, Dr. Liang of her assistant may instruct you on proper insertion, removal and cleaning of the lenses to minimize injuries and infections. You are recommended to cut your nails before coming in for your contact lens insertion and removal for assessment.
After contact lens fitting is completed, you can obtain your contact lens prescription with the brand, name, size, power, and curvature depth for contact lens ordering. Check here for Ontario regulations for contact lens purchase advisory.
There is usually a separate nominal fee for a contact lens fitting or exam, as it requires the Optometrist's time, service, and contact lens materials.

Can You Use The Same Lens Power for Years if Your Vision is Stable?
Your vision may stay the same after a good pair of glasses with professional PD (pupilarry distance) and pupil height measurement.
It is a recommended that you check your eyes yearly as your eye health may change, such as eyes becoming more dry, with more evaporative dry eye or tear deficient dry eyes. Some may even have allergies or computer vision fatigue, with decreased blink rate, affecting the tear and lid interaction.
Or your eyes' curvature may change, changing to a bigger base curve, which means you may need different sizing for your lenses.
In any of the cases, it would be best to refit the contact lenses yearly.
